The time had come for the Highgate Cricket and Lawn Tennis Club annual tournament. Every year this event brings out the best and worst of all involved.
I have to say that this is now probably about my 13th year of playing and I’ve been lucky enough to play with some really good partners and had some laughs over the years.
This year Lawrence and I entered the mixed together, after a very close first match we unfortunately lost but this did mean we get to go into the Mixed Plate draw. Working our way through we found ourselves in the Final come Saturday morning playing none other than my mother and a family friend!
After an enjoyable match (with only one foul shot going straight for Mum’s leg, sorry Mum) we managed to be victors and lift the beautiful trophies! Lawrence was especially ecstatic as it’s his first one since he was a junior.
Next up it was on to the Ladies Doubles final with my wonderful team partner Louise. I actually ended up playing my partner from last year (no hard feelings there though) and with Louise carrying us through with her elegant volleying we became champions!
It’s always a fun day with lots of people coming down to watch in the sunshine (luckily). After the presentation the drinks continue to flow and us hungry athletes begin queuing for Chanya’s epic BBQ. Being knackered this year we didn’t last too long at the 80’s disco and headed on home.
Tennis is a great game to get involved with, Highgate is especially a really social club welcoming players of all standards. Beginners to professionals, head on down if you’re looking for a game. Who knows maybe it’ll be you next year holding up that trophy!
