Now most of you are probably very familiar with the legendary Mexican restaurant that is La Bodega Negra, mainly because of its very unusual front door entrance. You approach the sex shop front and after mustering up the courage to open the door while looking over your shoulder you realise it is none other than a restaurant, phew. Wonder how many people go to the ‘wrong’ place!
We had a group of clients across from the US and it seemed a great place to host a big dinner within a fun environment. If you are more than 8 people you need to select from the set menus on offer which ranges from £49 – £69 a person.
After settling into our wonderful alcove complete with cardboard Mexican style scenarios plastered on the walls along with fairy lights, we started on the beers, brought back many a memory from my time across in Mexico.
For some reason I ended up becoming food president which gives you the power to tell the waiter if the pace of food needs changing or anymore dishes are required, then before you know it the feast begins.
First up were the braised beef tacos with salsa picante and then pork belly carnitas taco with salsa verde. Both were gorgeous and wonderfully moorish mouthfuls.
Resisting the temptation to order more we munched on the sesame tostados with guacamole which were constantly replenished.
Next two dishes were the spicy yellow fin tuna ceviche with a guajillo chilli and the camarones with salsa chipotle. I could have feasted on these all evening, refreshing fish with an added kick on the tuna ceviche then the milder shrimp in a flavoursome tomato based sauce.
Now things were starting to fill up and after a little breather and subsequent drinks the main dishes arrived.
Pollo al sarten, spachcock chicken with pumpkin sead mole, then a very tender slow roasted lamb barbacoa with salsa barracha which just fell off the bone.
The meat was accomponied by a roasted corn salad, serrano chilli and lime dressing which came in huge portions – luckily they did doggy bags so took plenty of this home for meals over the weekend! My little guilty pleasure was the pinto beans with chorizo, very similar to traditional frijoles from Mexico, incredibly fattening but tastes so good.
At this point the jet lag had kicked in, not surprisingly, and we lost a few before desert had arrived which meant all the more for us remaining souls. A very creamy lemon cheesecake with the all important crispy base, definitely enjoyed a leftover slice only yesterday, it’s a way to prolong the meal!
It was a great evening and the perfect setting for a big group with the added sharing concept of more than enough food. They also have a huge selection of tequila and cocktails so definitely a place to while away the evening if the mood takes your fancy, then in a hungover haze you can tell people you spent the night in a sex shop!
