Yet again I was lucky enough to be drawn in our club ballot for Wimbledon tickets so it was off down to no.2 court on the first Thursday of the tournament. It was a glorious day, with the whole of Wimbledon experiencing an intense heatwave during the two weeks, perhaps moving it back a week makes all the difference!
We stocked up on our alcohol allowance of bubbly and a couple of cans of pimms, the crucial elements along with various picnic snacks for a lunch break on Henman Hill.
On no.2 we had James Ward the British no.4 up first against Jiri Vesely from Czech Republic in the second round match. It was a close match and James fought well to win it in 4 sets, although there were moments of head in hands when he had easy points and made mistakes. He did incredibly well though and carried on through to the third round!
We then moseyed on over to the hill to set up our picnic, ever so civilised and could have easily lay down and had a little nap! It was from here though that we watched the gripping Nadal v Brown where Brown played tremendously and knocked out the spaniard.
We got back on court for the Berdych v Mahut mens singles where the 6th seed Berdych ended up walking it although Mahut fought valiantly in the middle nearly coming back to cause a surprise score.
Post match we received a call from the lovely Alice and Charlotte that they were heading down after work to join us on the hill for the last few hours of tennis. You can pay £18 for the post work session and normally get at least 2hrs in the sunshine with a glass of wine soaking up the atmosphere.
As always it was a lovely day out and no doubt made even better by the sunshine, to anyone thinking of going down next year I would highly recommend!
