Since Elisha’s departure we have been long overdue a girly dinner and a gossip of what each other has missed from our lives. Forever looking after the pennies I had a scout around online to find anywhere doing a discount and low and behold the wonderful Hot Dinners provided us with just the option.
Morden & Lea is a new restaurant which has just opened up on the edge of Chinatown right in the hustle and bustle of Leicester Square. It was started up by one of Gordon Ramsey’s ex chefs, Mark Sargeant, and the layout is simple with an upstairs or downstairs menu. The food is all European brasserie style with downstairs offering sharing dishes and upstairs being your more standard A La Carte menu.
A fact for you is the restaurant gets it name from two 17th Century cartographers who were the first to map out Soho as it is now known.
The upstairs menu is very reasonably priced, either going with 2 courses for £29 or 3 courses for £35 and we had the added bonus of 25% off!
We ended up mixing and matching from both menus, starting with sharing a Neil’s Yard cheeses and moons green charcuterie board. Both were lovely and the perfect appetiser to nibble away at before our mains.
For mains I went with the fillet of cod, with black rice, chorizo, courgettes and baby squid. Lovely mixture and went down a treat while feeling lovely and light.
A tad too full to each have a pudding we decided just to share the strawberries with Brillat-Savarin Chantilly and almond crumble. This was a definite ‘love or hate’ dish – I rather enjoyed it whereas Elisha wasn’t sure and she was completely put off by the cheesy flavour coming through in the Chantilly!
It was a wonderful catch up with the girls as always and the food was surprisingly good so don’t be put off by it’s location, give it a try!
